What do plants eat?

This display shows an experiment that was done in the 1600s by a Belgian scientist named Jan Baptist Van Helmont (1577- 1644). He planted a willow tree with known weight into the soil with known weight. He weighed them again in five years. He concluded that the weight gain of the tree was not due to the soil but from the water. Of course people did not know about photosynthesis back then.
